A veritable festival of youth and social media

The 26th and 27th September should see a veritable festival of events linked to youth participation, youth work and social media down in London. In fact, I wish I'd seen all the connections earlier to brand the whole lot as a festival.

Here's what is coming up:

Social Networking Sites and Youth Participation (26th Sept, 10am till 2.45pm) - organised the Local Government Information Unit, a seminar all around the use of online social networks to engage young people in decision making. I'll be giving an introductory presentation and overview of all the different contexts in which social network sites can be part of participation - and Katy, Carl and John from Devon will be there sharing their experiences of exploring using Bebo and MySpace for youth engagement across a rural county. Alas this event does have a price tag attached (£250 for those who are not members of the LGIU Children's Services Network), but, come 2.45 you can join us at no cost for:

Research launch of the Youth Work and Social Networking report (26th Sept, 2.45pm till 4.45pm) - the work that seems to have taken over a large chunk of the last six months of my time. Along with Pete Cranston, I'll be sharing what we've discovered, providing both a theoretical and practical account of how youth workers and other professionals working with young people can support young people to navigate the risks and make the most of the opportunities of online social networking, and opening up a discussion of different uses of social network sites in youth work.

The research launch is free to attend, and if you want more details or to reserve your place, get in touch with ritak@nya.org.uk

UK Youth Online open space event (27th Sept, 10am till 5pm, followed by a trip to a local pub) - on Saturday 27th we'll be opening up the agenda even more to explore all things linked to young people and social media. Thanks to the kind support of DIUS this free event will provide space for practitioners, academics, innovators, funders, managers and others interested in the impact of new technology on work with young people to gather together and explore a wide range of issues through short presentations, discussions and demonstrations.

For more details about UK Youth Online check out the network website, where you can also register to take part.

Please do pass details of all these events on to anyone who you think might be interested.

nbsp;

And what if you can't make the 26th and 27th September, or if London is a bit of a trek for you? Well, get in touch and let's get planning for some more local festivals exploring youth, technology and social media...

Drinks and the New York Philharmonic

I'm feeling more like myself tonight, helped by a day working at home and an evening spent at the pub with Jess catching up on life, love and all things. Work's website needed attending to, one of my many "fascinating" tasks, and that was followed by 50 lengths of the pool (my current average), a dip in the spa pool and a few minutes in the steam room. Steam rooms are very hot.

We tried the Marlborough Arms, just off Tottenham Court Rd, tonight and I'm pleased to say it was a great success. A large pub with a newly refurbished interior, it had a large variety of drinks and we had no problem finding a table despite it being fairly full. Staff were lovely and the prices weren't bad either so all in all a great other local.

Tomorrow I am off to see the New York Philharmonic play Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F Major and Stravinsky's Rite of Spring at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the Proms season. I *LOVE* the Proms and firmly believe that this is one of the best British/London institutions. M(attias), my Swedish flatmate, and I will pay 5 pounds (that's two to three cups of coffee here) for this pleasure and that's a bargain if ever I heard one. Beautiful music in an amazing venue, what more could I ask for?

In other news, I am a tad worried about the ever-more-concerning issues in the Caucasus and in particular Russia's involvement. We live in "interesting" times. And lastly I'm outting myself as an Obama supporter, I was never really a Clinton fan at all, and it's fascinating to watch the changing face of US politics through this campaign. But bed calls for now . . .

Avishai Cohen - Gently Disturbed

With this release on his own Razdaz Recordz, Avishai Cohen firmly entrenches himself as a frontrunning innovator in the piano trio medium. The Israeli bassist is joined by Mark Guiliana on drums and countryman Shai Maestro on piano - the latter a change in personnel from Continuo (Razdaz, 2006) and Live At The Blue Note (Razdaz, 2007).

"Seattle" represents a slightly ponderous start, with a lyrical bass solo from Cohen over meandering chordal piano vamps, but it is not more than a gentle prelude to what is coming up. The next track, "Chutzpan," gives a fuller insight into the incredible locked synchronisation that exists between these three musicians. Shifting between angular, cascading motifs and jumping, jittery movements with consummate ease, the trio is well-drilled yet instinctive in its manner of interaction.

"The Ever Evolving Etude" is an outstanding track, a perfect example of Cohen's minutely accurate compositional style. Based around a couple of piano riffs and building in degrees, it works up to a frenzy of intricately subdivided phrasing with manically precise off-pulse syncopations. It's a wall of sound that doesn't stand still. Similar traits are present on tunes such as "Pinzin Kinzin," "Eleven Wives," and the dense album closer "Structure in Emotion," but they are all different enough to make the CD unpredictable.

A few slower items add further spice to the mix: "Variations in G Minor," "Puncha Puncha," and the title track, "Gently Disturbed," are more relaxed but no less crafty. It's all perfectly executed and Cohen's compositional identity has become distinctively recognisable - in piano voicing and the rhythmic intensity he draws from his group. In Maestro and Guiliana he has found ideal poetic partners.

The disc's title is reflective of the music - many of Cohen's ideas are challenging, but not inaccessible. Listeners can almost obliviously float through the advanced concepts without getting hung up, in the same way the musicians do. So, while it can take several listenings to fully understand what's going on, that effort should not be a deterrent to enjoying this release.

Track listing: Seattle; Chutzpan; Lo Baiom Velo Balyla; Pinzin Kinzin; Puncha Puncha; Eleven Wives; Gently Disturbed; The Ever Evolving Etude; Variations in G Minor; Umray; Structure in Emotion.

Personnel: Avishai Cohen: bass; Mark Guiliana: drums; Shai Maestro: piano.

Published @ <a href="http://www.allaboutjazz.com"target="_blank">allaboutjazz, 27/8/08 - <A HREF="http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=30395"target="_blank">click here for original.

<p"text-align: left; text-indent: 0cm; line-height: 150%;" align="left">As you may have read in my short biography (home page), I have had a long interest in the psychology of SCUBA diving. I have undertaken a couple of projects in this area and this is one of those. The work was part of my MSc in Psychological Research Methods, undertaken at the University of Plymouth, and sponsered by the Diving Diseases Research Centre (DDRC).

Krug Chamber at DDRC (www.ddrc.org)

<p"text-align: left; text-indent: 0cm; line-height: 150%;" align="left">At the time I did not intend to write it up for publication in a peer review journal, but following some positive feedback from Academics, Specalist Diving Physicians and Researchers, and the Editor of a Journal, I grasped the thistle.

<p"text-align: left; text-indent: 0cm; line-height: 150%;" align="left">Below is the abstract from the article accepted for publication by lsquo;Diving and Hyperbaric Medicinelsquo;, which is lsquo; The combined journal of the South Pacific Underwater Medicine Societyrsquo; and the lsquo;European Underwater and Baromedical Societyrsquo;. The paper will be available in the next edition of the journal (October 2008). I hope you find it of interest and I look forward to discussing the work with anyone who wants to get in touch.

Personality as a predisposing factor for DCI: A pilot study

<p"text-align: left; text-indent: 0cm; line-height: 150%;" align="left">Authors: Sam Harding amp; Phil Gee

<p"text-align: left; text-indent: 0cm; line-height: 150%;" align="left">This study aimed to identify differences in personality characteristics related to Decompression Illness (DCI) in recreational SCUBA divers. A matched control group of 9 divers (without DCI) and research group of 9 divers (with DCI) were recruited. Following a chamber dive (control group), or post-treatment for DCI (research group), three psychometric scales; Locus of Control (LoC), Sensation Seeking Scale, and Eysenck’s Personality Questionnaire – Revised (EPQ-R) were administered together with a Diving History Questionnaire and questions on motoring. One significant difference was identified and lay between engine sizes, with those experiencing DCI having cars with larger engines (p lt; .01). The data were inconsistent with previous research that suggested a relationship between sensation seeking and risk taking. Further research is needed to elucidate the relationship between diving injury and personality.

"Tough on Crime, Tough on the Causes of Crime"

Thirty children have died in custody in the UK since 1990. There has never been an enquiry into any of them.

This struck me as particularly poignant in light of the recent focus on youth crime, in particular knife crime. Hardly a day seems to pass without a story about some teenage “yob” having stabbed another young person, of gangs roaming the streets, threatening violence. The government seem desperate, and the public afraid.

But does this really reflect the reality of Britain today?

In 2005/06 301, 860 offences were committed by under-18s. The most common crime was theft and handling. This represented a fall from previous years in crimes committed. And yet convictions rose by 26%. 2,900 young people have been locked up in the past year alone. Children as young as 10 are deemed criminally responsible, an age declared unacceptable internationally.

As Y Care International's Youth Justice in Action report puts it, efforts at rehabilitation or keeping young people out of the criminal justice system are often represented as being “soft on crime”. The results of taking the “hard” approach are appalling. 792 child protection referrals involving children in custody in the past two years. 677 recorded instances of self-harm in 11 months. 8 major injuries in 6 months caused by the use of restraint methods. A young boy choking to death on his own vomit as a result of being restrained, after refusing to clean a sandwich toaster. Why are these stories not in the papers?

From here:

With Drupal version 7, due later this year, Buytaert hopes to include technologies that will make sites running Drupal part of the Semantic Web, Tim Berners-Leersquo;s vision for making online data understandable to machines as well as people. If Drupal hosts a website containing a companyrsquo;s Securities and Exchange Commission profile, for example, other sites could access just the third-quarter revenues, without having to retrieve the whole profile. The goal of sharing data in smaller, better-defined chunks is to make Drupal a key part of the growing ecosystem of websites that share structured data. If this effort succeeds, it will ensure Drupalrsquo;s continued relevance to the still-developing Web.mdash;Clay Shirky
